CodyChat Installation Guide — Step by Step

Installing CodyChat is a same-day job for most owners: upload the files, run the installer, connect the database, done. This guide covers the whole flow in order, plus the handful of snags that cause 90% of “CodyChat installation failed” messages and how to fix each one. If you have not chosen a build yet, start with the download guide; if you are still picking a host, read the hosting guide first.

Before you start

Server requirements

A standard PHP + MySQL host. A current PHP version on your host's default settings, MySQL database access, and enough disk for uploads. Most shared hosting works to start — see the hosting guide for scaling notes.

What you need in hand

1) Your CodyChat build (from the store, delivered instantly). 2) Hosting control panel access (cPanel or similar). 3) An empty MySQL database + user. 4) 30–60 spare minutes.

Golden rule: back up first

If you are installing over an existing site, take a full backup of files and database before touching anything. It turns any mistake into a 5-minute rollback.

HTTPS ready

Set your SSL certificate up before going live. Chats handle logins and personal messages — “not secure” warnings kill communities before they start.

The installation, step by step

Step 1 — Upload the files

Extract your CodyChat archive locally, then upload the contents to your web root (or a subfolder like /chat) using FTP or your file manager. Keep the folder structure intact.

Step 2 — Create the database

In your hosting panel, create a new MySQL database and a user with full access to it. Note down the host, database name, username and password — the installer asks for all four.

Step 3 — Run the installer

Visit your domain in a browser. The installer takes over: it checks your server, asks for the database details, and creates the tables. Most installers finish in under two minutes.

Step 4 — Create the admin account

Set your owner username, password and site name. Use a strong, unique password for the owner account — it controls everything.

Step 5 — Check permissions

If the installer flags a folder, set it writable (typically the upload directory). Owners on restrictive hosts sometimes need to adjust file permissions manually — the exact folder name is shown in the error, so you always know what to fix.

Step 6 — Enter the site

Log in, open the admin panel and set your timezone, language and room defaults. Your chat is now live. Next: a theme, a login page and your first addons.

Common installation errors and fixes

SymptomUsual causeFix
Installer stuck or erroring at the first stepOlder builds have a known installer issue on some hostsUse a patched build — we ship one flagged “installer issue patched”, or contact support with the exact error
“Cannot connect to database”Wrong host value — many panels use a localhost alias, not “localhost”Copy the exact database host from your hosting panel, including any prefix
Permission denied on upload/installFolder not writable by the web serverSet the flagged folder permissions to writable, or ask your host to do it (accounts often run as a specific user)
Blank page after installPHP version too old/new, or a missing extensionSwitch the site's PHP version in the hosting panel and retry — most builds run happily on a current PHP release
Login page reloads foreverURL mismatch after moving domainsUpdate the site URL in config/panel to the exact final domain, with HTTPS

Still stuck? Open a ticket — we answer the same day and have seen every one of these before.

After installation: quick hardening checklist

1. Move or rename the installer

Delete it once you are in — an exposed installer is an open door.

2. Enable HTTPS everywhere

Force SSL so logins and messages are encrypted in transit (learn more in the hosting guide).

3. Set up automatic backups

Daily database + weekly files. Test a restore once so you know it works.

4. Create a test account

Join as a normal member to confirm the experience — then hand a moderator account to someone you trust.

Installation FAQ

How long does installation take?

Usually 30–60 minutes from upload to a live chat, including database setup — most of it waiting for files to transfer.

Do I need SSH or command line?

No. Everything here works through a browser, FTP and your hosting panel — no terminal required.

Can you install it for me?

We provide guidance with every build and step in when you share the exact error. Support is included, so you are never alone on a step.

Will my host work?

If it runs PHP and MySQL, almost certainly yes. Check the hosting guide for the details to verify before you buy anything new.
